There’s no business like show business, there’s no business I know…
Being on stage is one of the most exciting and enjoyable experiences you can participate in and we’re always on the lookout for new members to join our ranks. Whether on stage as members of our cast or off as members of our backstage crew we’d love to have you join us. We’ve a wide range of members, from teenagers to retirees and from all walks of life. Rehearsals are always fun and they’re a great way to get out and meet new people.
Whether you come for one show or stay for 50 everybody is welcome and we look forward to seeing you.
Be an Actor
Acting Members make up the core of the society, for legal reasons the minimum age requirement is 16 but otherwise the society is open to everybody. For singing we divide up into four voice groups; Bass/Baritones, Tenors, Altos, Sopranos.
New members are required to take a voice test to find out which section they belong in, but there are no ongoing requirements for membership other than the annual subscription fees of £25 for the year then £20 for each show that you appear in.
We rehearse every Wednesday at 7:30pm at the
Hexham Community Centre
People with principal roles also rehearse on Tuesdays at 7:30pm at Acomb Methodist Church. Closer to the production week we begin rehearsals at 7:00pm and everybody rehearses on both Tuesday and Wednesday with extra rehearsals scheduled as required for the week before the show.
Join Our Stage Crew
Almost every part of our production is done by our members, from raising the curtain and setting the scenery to operating the lighting and selling programmes.
Our Backstage Crew consists of;
The Stage Manager: in charge of the rest of the crew, the stage manager organises changing the scenery, cues the lighting and curtains and keeps the whole production running on schedule.
The Stage Crew: builds the set and shifts the scenery ensuring that the Stage Manager’s plans are carried out correctly.
Props: sources and organises the props used by the people on stage.
Prompt: on those (hopefully rare) occasions that the actors are lost for words the prompt reminds them and helps keep the show running smoothly.
Lighting: controls the lighting desk ensuring that all the pre-arranged changes go off according to the stage manager’s schedule.
Front of House: the face of the society when people come to see our shows. Front of house staff take tickets, direct people to their seats and sell programmes.
How to join us
If you want to get involved come along to a rehearsal and have a word with us or contact us for more information.
Unfortunately once a show has been cast we are unable to accept new acting members for that production but you’re still welcome to come to a rehearsal to chat to us about joining us for the next one.
If joining us on stage doesn’t appeal to you you can support the society in other ways.
Become a Patron
Become a patron by making a small donation of £5 (or more) a year and receive priority notification and booking for future performances.
